Minister of Justice Ivan Šimonović elected for a top UN post

Croatian Minister of Justice and a ZAGIMUN supporter, Ivan Šimonović has been named Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights at the United Nations.

Šimonović was nominated by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon himself to head the New York Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Croatian Minister of Justice was chosen between 128 other candidates due to his successful career and experience with human rights and the UN. Šimonović began his career as assistant to Croatia's Foreign Minister, continuing to work as the Croatian Ambassador to the UN in 1997-2002. He was president of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2002. His professional, diplomatic and political career is rich with international and domestic successes and recognition. Šimonović is the first person to hold the new post, approved by the General Assembly in December 2009.

Šimonović has been ZAGIMUN's patron since its launch in 2007 and has since supported the conference in various ways including meeting the delegates in person. The ZAGIMUN team strongly believes in his primeness and ability to carry this great responsibility. We wish him the best of luck and a lot of success, the same way he believed in us.
